Background

Music photographers are living in difficult times. At concerts they often are only allowed to take photos during the first couple of songs. There’s almost no space left in newspapers for their photos. To help out music photographers, Floor Boogaart and I created the Lex van Rossen Award in 2007, an annual award for young, European music photographers (under 35 years of age), named after the late Lex van Rossen, a famous Dutch music photographer who unfortunately died shortly before and who worked for newspapers and magazines like NRC handelsblad, OOR, Haarlems Dagblad. The winner of the award got an amount of money (2500 euros), and his/her work could be seen at the annual Popview exhibition, that included the work of other nominees for the award as well.

Dennis Duijnhouwer: Popular Work

When Popview 2010 exhobition could be seen upstairs at Noorderlicht Photo Gallery, in the cellars of the gallery there was an exhibition of Dutch music photographer Dennis Duijnhouwer, on invitation of Popview. Duinhouwer, who was nominated for the Lex van Rossen Award in 2008, showed photos taken between 2005-2010. He wondered what music photography actually is, and where it’s boundaries are.

“I’m sure if I take photos of a DJ playing or a band performing that this counts as music photograhy. But what if I take photos of girls smoking a cigarette in the smoking area of a pop venue during a concert, or if I take a photo of my best friend, that also plays in a band, or if I take a photo of a toilet in a night club…does that count as music photography as well?”em>, Duijnhouwer wondered.

Popview 2010 and Dennis Duijnhouwer: Popular Work were opened by Annie Hoogendoorn on the 14th of January 2010.

As an addition we organised a portfolio review with dennis Duijnhouwer at Noorderlicht Photo Gallery. Duijnhouwer judged and cmmented on the portfolios of young photographers, came up with good advice, and gave a private tour through his exhibition. Participation in the portfolio review was free. People whom were interested, could send us an email. We made a selection out of the applications. The portfolio review could be attended by 10 photographers.
